Synopsis: For more than twenty years, award-winning filmmaker Juan Escobedo has worked alongside the Promotoras—survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault who now serve as community health workers in Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles. Rooted in this long-standing community relationship, Las Promotoras Against Violence captures the courage of women who have transformed their own trauma into leadership and service. The film follows the Promotoras as they confront critical issues shaping their neighborhoods, including domestic violence, sexual assault, HIV prevention, and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. Through grassroots education and advocacy, they provide support where it is needed most, building pathways toward healing and resilience. Through intimate interviews, the documentary reveals stories of survival and transformation—narratives that break silence, reclaim dignity, and inspire others to end cycles of abuse. Urgent yet deeply human, Las Promotoras Against Violence is a testament to the strength of survivors and the collective power of solidarity.
