East LA Pioneers at LACMA

Asco: Elite of the Obscure, A Retrospective, 1972–1987

Asco was formed by Gronk, Patssi Valdez, Willie Herron and Harry Gamboa in a garage in East LA in 1972. They created the “No Movies” as a protest to Hollywood and it’s lack of representation of Latinos. They also had “Instant Mural” and “Walking Murals” as way to protest the Vietnam War and riots happening in East LA.
On August 31, 2011, Juan Escobedo had the opportunity to visit LACMA at the opening reception for ASCO.
